Qajaq model - type?
Author Last Post

Hi John - I'll check in with them to see. Thanks.

Doesn't the museum have an information on its provenance? That could aid in determining what it is?

Thanks for this info, I’ll share it with the museum so they can update their info card.

It's actually more of a jade green dye, though it looks darker or lighter depending on what it's resting on or in. It's semi translucent so it glows in sunlight sometimes. Currently needs to be stripped and re-skinned after so many years of use (and the perky "tail" broke when it blew off my car in a gust as I was loading it) so I hope I can duplicate the color.

That olive drab color is KILLER !!!

That looks very much like the West Greenland hunting qajaq surveyed by Harvey Golden that he designates "1935 Sisiumuit" (based on date and location where it was collected). It has that prounounced "skeg" built into the keel.

I have a replica of it built by Dawa Nordrup of Monkcraft in 2007 (only variation is an enlarged rather than "ocean" cockpit). Here's a link to Brian Shulz's post about the model -- it's one that he has built over the years for clients, one of his favorite traditional qajags. His post includes Harvey's survey drawing.

I can attest to how fast and maneuverable it is -- have been using mine for 15 years. At 31 pounds (it's 17' 4" x 20") it's one of my easiest to transport and launch, as well.

Here's a few of shots of mine. I think you have to cut and paste the links to get to the shots in my public Flickr account.

I’ve linked a photo of a qajaq model on display in the Newburyport Customs House Maritime Museum. If some could identify the style and area this style originated, it would be greatly appreciated.
