May 2007. The Qajaq USA events committee recently purchased eight bright-blue Brooks tuiliks, four aquilisaqs (short skirts), three avataqs, two harpoons, three SOF (skin-on-frame) kayaks and six paddles. The new gear is for use at Qajaq USA events by participants and traveling instructors. It will be transported from event to event. The gear was used for the first time at the Michigan Training Camp in August 2007. Participant reaction was very positive. One comment expressed was that this was a very tangible membership benefit. This gear was made possible by your membership contributions. If you are an equipment manufacturer and wish to include a bid for future purchases, please contact the events committee.

19th Annual Delmarva Paddler's Retreat 19th Annual Delmarva Paddler's Retreat
Oct 5-7, 2007. If you missed Delmarva you missed a truly special event! The event was especially meaningful this year with the addition of our Greenland guests Kamp Absalonsen and Adam Hansen who added a strong cultural element. Adam discussed kayaking in the Disco bay area (including showing a very interesting video clip of a massive iceberg calving). Kamp was eager to lecture about and critique kayaks, and offer tips on rolling and harpoon throwing. Registration and Details »

Kamp Absalonsen(Oct 5 -7, 2007) Kamp Absalonsen to appear at Delmarva. Qajaq USA has arranged and sponsored for Kamp (pronounced "Kampy") Absalonsen, the vice-president of Qaannat Kattuffiat and chief Greenland competition judge, to participate at the upcoming Delmarva Paddler's Retreat. Kamp is known for his deep knowledge of Greenlandic kayaking, strict judging and blunt comments (he makes Simon Cowell look tame by comparison!). Don't make the mistake of calling your qajaq a boat in Kamp's presence. As Kamp will tell you, "A Qajaq is not a boat! A Qajaq is a Qajaq!"

Note - a fund was collected at Delmarva, charging $1.00 for each time that someone called their kayak a boat. Suffice to say, this fund was large enough by the end of the event to help Kamp with his trip expenses.
